What Oil Does Your Car Take?

Check the Motor Oil Label

Check your owner’s manual for Nissan’s recommended viscosity rating, which is the motor oil’s ability to flow through the engine at different temperatures. Viscosity is categorized as “XW-XX” or “SAE 5W-30.” The number in front of the “W” rates the flow of the oil (i.e. viscosity) at 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Lower numbers indicate that the oil thickens in cold weather.

Does the Type of Oil Matter?

Yes, it matters a great deal. There are different types of motor oil — each offering unique characteristics that could improve or hinder your car’s performance, depending on what’s recommended for your Nissan vehicle:

Conventional Motor Oil

Conventional oil is refined from crude oil and includes additives, such as detergents, sludge neutralizing agents, antioxidants that inhibit metal degradation, and anti-foam agents that prevent air bubbles. This is the least expensive motor oil type.

High-Mileage Motor Oil

This type of oil is for vehicles with 75,000 miles or more on their odometers, and has additives and chemicals that cause external o-rings to increase in size, which prevents oil leakage in older engines.

Synthetic Blend Motor Oil

Synthetic blend motor oil combines conventional oil and full synthetic oil. It’s reinforced with additives to prevent engine against wear and increase performance at high heat and cold weather, which aren’t found in conventional oils.

Full Synthetics Motor Oil

Full synthetic oil undergoes a more extensive refining process than conventional oil. It includes artificially made compounds and additives to keep the engine clean, while protecting it from damage and heat. New Nissan vehicles require synthetic oil.

In general, it’s not a good idea to mix oil types. For example, if you mix conventional and synthetic oil, you’ll dilute the properties of the synthetic oil. Synthetic blends are specifically blended to deliver the high performance of synthetic oil while being cost-effective like conventional oil.
